. that's the fiscal cliff. we reach the brink in two days. let's go live now to dana bash on capitol hill. because of news of a setback. dana, what do we know? >> that's right. we got this word from democratic sources about a half an hour ago. maybe a little bit more. that they consider a major setback to be going on right now. a poison pill, something that the republicans offered last night and democrats rejected today. it's called technically chain cpi, the buzz word for it. what it means for real people and real terms, would be that social security recipients would see smaller checks on a monthly basis and that's why democrats are saying that this is a nonstarter. the president did propose this to the house speakers as part of a larger deal. he even talked about it again this morning on nbc, the president. but democrats are saying that they simply do not see this in this miner, smaller mini deal. they don't want to deal with the entitlement issue at all until a later date when they can deal with it in a broad sense. here's an example of what we heard a half hour ago from the republican

whitfield. here are the top stories we are following right now. >>> that fiscal cliff. we are at the very edge. senate leaders are working through the weekend trying to reach a deal before the deadline. today president obama called on lawmakers to meet their deadlines and responsibilities and forge a compromise to avoid tax hike and spending cuts from taking effect. lisa desjardins is live on capitol hill. what's going on right now? >> reporter: right now it's all behind closed doors, martin. what we just have learned in the last hour, in fact, what reporters have seen here, a surprise. house speaker john boehner was here at the capitol. we're still trying to sort out exactly why he was here, but he wasn't here for very long, it seems. he left in the last hour. also, we were able to see some of senator mcconnell's staffers. i was able to speak to one of them coming in and out of these kind of closed-door planning meetings. he said they've been here since 9:00 a.m. they plan to work all day and we may see his boss, senator mcconnell, later today. that shows us kind of where things stand. i
. >> thanks. >>> despite all the hand-wringing over the fiscal cliff, investors haven't melt much pain. that doesn't mean if won't get ugly on wall street if we don't have a deal soon. cnn's alison kosik looks at the consequences. >> reporter: don, with wall street focused squarely on the fiscal cliff, there is little incentive for investors to move stocks higher so stocks ended lower for the fifth session in a row friday with the dow tumbling 158 points. this slide began last week when speaker boehner was unable to bring his plan b. to a vote. that would have avoided the fiscal cliff. but he wasn't able to bring that to a vote. that made investors lose confidence, and since then, nothing really concrete has happened with the fiscal cliff to convince investors that a deal can get done. so at this point, the market doesn't really want a band-aid or so-called framework deal. in fact, one trader told me that it would almost be better if we went over the cliff, because that would give the markets some certainty. they would at least know what to expect. that is, of course, instead of a band

. >> mohammed jamjoom, thank you for that. >>> fears of the fiscal cliff are taking some of the holiday cheer out of wall street. cnn's alison kosik is watching the post christmas trading. she joins us next. >>> retailers were hoping shoppers will spend big today. early figures show holiday sales slum slumped to the lowest levels in three years. alison kosik, every time i drive by the mall, the parking lot was full. every time i went in one, there were people everywhere. what is behind the weak sales this year and can post christmas shoppers really turn things around now? >> you make good points, victor. analysts are telling us there are two big factors at work here. hurricane sandy, hit holiday shopping right when it was beginning to rev up in early november. then the worries about the fiscal cliff they took over everybody's pocketbooks. people are really worried their taxes going up. so what do you get? you get holiday sales not doing too hot. holiday sales are up a little less than 1%, winds up being the weakest growth in three years. it is still early. these numbers are still rolling in.
